Description
The first image shows a child’s toy truck in the process of either being taken apart or put back together. However, contrary to what we would expect, a peg has been hammered through the frame of the image itself, which dislocates the meaning of the image. I drew inspiration for this from the effects used by trompe l’oeil painters in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
The second image shows a bowl with smarties and a spoon. However, everything is not asĀ it seems due to the bowl being a vomit bowl used in hospitals and due to the inclusion of a stomach tablet in amongst the smarties.
The third image was made in tribute to a friend of mine who was a wood sculptor and who passed away a few years ago. It shows a blue print of four views of Michelangelo’s David juxtaposed with a block of cherry wood sporting a chisel. A mallet and catapult lie nearby.
Finally, a few petals are scattered across a patch of grass. Contrasting strongly with the green lawn, they seem alien as if they might have been placed there on purpose.
